About the museum
Ål Bygdamuseum lies a little above Ål town centre, towards Øvre-Ål. The museum was founded in 1924 by Ål museumslag (Ål Museum Association), starting from the old houses on the farm Leksvol, and more buildings and objects have been added since.
The museum grounds are divided into four main areas: Leksvolgarden with the old farm buildings from northern Leksvol, the upper farmstead with some special houses from the municipality, the støl (mountain summer farm) with a collection of summer farm buildings, and the husmannsplass (cotter's farm), which shows the houses most common on a cotter's farm. In total there are 31 buildings in the area. The museum also has several hay meadows (slåtteenger).
Every year there is a family day with a concert during Folkemusikkveka (Folk Music Week) at the end of May, and the slåtte day (slåttedagen) in July is a regular event. Ål Museumslag owns the museum and is also its friends' association, while operations are run by Hallingdal Museum.
