About the museum
The Nesch Museum opened in 1993 in Ål kulturhus (cultural centre) and shows the world's largest permanent public exhibition of the art of Rolf Nesch (1893–1975). It includes drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and material pictures, and the museum tells the story of the internationally renowned artist, who lived in Ål for more than 20 years.
Rolf Nesch was a German-Norwegian sculptor and graphic artist, born in Esslingen, Germany, in 1893. When he fled Nazi Germany in 1933, he was already a highly respected artist. He chose Norway as his new home country. The first years were difficult, but he gradually became a well-known artist with great influence on the younger generation. He is internationally known as one of the great renewers of printmaking, with methods such as gjennometsing (through-etching) and metal prints.
In 1950 Nesch married the actress Ragnhild Hald, and the following year they bought the farm Rud in Ål. He renamed it Ragnhildrud, and he lived and worked there for the rest of his life.
