About the museum

Træna museum shows Stone Age culture and archaeological finds from the neighbouring island of Sanna. The finds are dated 9,000 years back in time, which is why Træna can call itself “Norway's oldest fishing village” (“Norges eldste fiskevær”). Fragile objects from Sanna and from the Kirkehelleren cave are on display, including one of the bone hooks (beinkrokene) that inspired the coat of arms of Træna municipality.

The main building is an old Nordland house (nordlandshus) from 1910, called “Huset på veien” (“The House on the Road”), right by Træna church. It was originally a private home, but was also used as a doctor's surgery and a place for net mending. The house displays objects from the Middle Ages, including a mysterious gold ring with Latin inscriptions found in a potato field on Sanna, and the other rooms show objects from the 1900s that give an insight into life in a coastal family.

The exhibition “Træna–Hawaii: Portraits of the Sea People” (Portretter av havfolket) is shown permanently and is based on the camera that Alma Sandøy received as a gift from her brother in Hawaii in 1925. The museum shop sells local products, souvenirs and books, and a café is run in July. The museum is a department of Helgeland Museum.
