About the museum
Hamsunstugu is a former dwelling house in the village of Garmo in Lom municipality, thirteen kilometres east of Lom town centre along national road 15 towards Otta. The house was built in the 1850s. The author Knut Hamsun was baptised in the church at Garmo, and although his place of birth is disputed, he lived here during the first three years of his life, from 1859 to 1862, and again for a year as a young man in 1873–1874.
After the house had been used as a dwelling, it was for a period a smithy at the farm Hesthåggån. In the 1950s it was returned to use as a living house, and in 1959 it opened as a museum in memory of Hamsun's centenary. Today the house is furnished as a small dwelling from the mid-1800s, with some objects that belonged to the Hamsun family.
The house is owned by Hamsunlaget i Lom (the Hamsun Society in Lom). It is open to the public in the summer season and otherwise by arrangement with the culture office of Lom municipality.
