About the museum

Jutulheimen lies high up in Prestberget with a view over Vågåmo, with Ullinsvin as its nearest neighbour. The nine log houses are set up as an inner courtyard of an old large farm (storgard) and come from different farms in Vågå; among them are two stuer (living houses), a stall and a smithy. The houses are from the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s.

The name comes from the troll Jutulen, who is said to live in the rock by Jutulporten right below the farmstead. Asbjørnsen and Moe wrote down the fairy tale “Jutulen og Blessomen” (“The Jutul and Blessomen”), which made the place known. The place was originally called Kustigholet, and the farmstead was named Jutulheimen in 1956. The rural heritage farmstead was officially opened on 21 July 1957.

By arrangement, visitors can be shown exhibitions on the mountain man Jo Gjende and the woodcarver Jo Visdal, and an exhibition on instruments from all over Gudbrandsdalen. Vågå historielag (local history society), founded in 1929, owns the farmstead and the collections. In 2003 Musea i Nord-Gudbrandsdalen was established, which from 2008 has been part of Gudbrandsdalsmusea AS.
