About the museum
Lom stavkyrkje (Lom stave church) is one of the largest and oldest stave churches in Norway. The timber of the oldest part was felled in the winter of 1157–58, and the church has since been the main church of Lom. It was an important hub between east and west, where pilgrims and other travellers shared the space with the local people.
The nave and the choir are built in stave construction and framed by a corner post at each corner. The church has a raised central section (midtrom), where the roof is carried by a row of internal posts. Originally a gallery (svalgang) ran all the way round the church, but it was removed when the church was extended in the mid-17th century. The dragon heads on the roof have characterised the church from the very beginning: the uppermost dragon head on the east side and the ridge comb above the choir are copies from 1964, and the originals are displayed in the stave church exhibition in Lom.
The church has a large collection of votive paintings, most of them painted by Eggert Munch, a priest's son born in Vågå in 1685.
