About the museum
Norsk Fjellmuseum was established in 1994 on the initiative of Claus Helberg, who was an inspector with Den Norske Turistforening (DNT, the Norwegian Trekking Association). The museum is in the centre of Lom and is part of Norsk fjellsenter, an approved visitor centre for the national parks Jotunheimen, Breheimen and Reinheimen. The collections deal with the mountain region, with how people and nature have affected each other, and with the first tourists in the mountains.
A central part of the exhibitions consists of archaeological finds that have emerged from the ice on the mountain. Around a hundred objects are shown, including prehistoric skis with bindings, shoes, an arrow and a Viking Age mitten, as well as the skeleton of a dog that is around 500 years old. The finds show how people have travelled and hunted in the high mountains for thousands of years.
A new main exhibition opened in 2023. It shows the mountain’s four seasons on a large screen, half a DNT tourist cabin, stuffed animals, a life-size mammoth and a weather room where visitors can explore the weather themselves. The exhibition also deals with nature conservation and the national parks. The museum also includes Klimapark 2469 at Juvvassplatået, which was established in 2011 and has an ice tunnel into the glacier. In 2019 the museum was nominated for the Årets museum (Museum of the Year) award.
