About the museum
The museum is part of the Military History Institute in Bratislava. Collections of heavy combat equipment began to be assembled in Trenčín in 1993–1994; because plans for a museum in Trenčín could not be realised, the museum took over the site of the disbanded air base in Piešťany in 2002.
The first permanent exhibition on the armament of the Czechoslovak army in 1945–1992 opened in 2004 in three halls at the former airfield. In 2023–2026 the site underwent extensive reconstruction, during which a new exhibition hall was added, the original halls were adapted and a recreation zone was created.
The current exhibition, Military History of Slovakia after 1945, has been open to the public since 8 September 2026. It is complemented by the exhibition Slováci v rovnošatách 1848–2020 (Slovaks in Uniform), from 2021. The collection holds more than ten thousand objects.
