About the museum
The Diecézne múzeum (Diocesan Museum) in Nitra arose from the initiative of the Nitra bishop Viliam Judák, who developed an older idea of Cardinal Ján Chryzostom Korec. It is housed in Nitra Castle, and its aim is to make the history of the Nitra diocese and its church-art monuments accessible to the wider public.
The first part, the permanent exhibition of literary monuments connected with the beginnings of Christianity and with the oldest history of the nation and the Nitra diocese, opened on 5 July 2007. It contains facsimiles of documents, for example the text On the Conversion of the Bavarians and Carantanians, letters from Pope John VIII to Svätopluk and Methodius, and examples of Glagolitic and Cyrillic monuments and of the Nitra Gospels, supplemented by maps of Great Moravia, models of churches and archaeological finds.
The second part, the treasury with the cathedral treasure of the Nitra Cathedral and the Bishop's Office, was solemnly opened on 5 July 2008. It displays chalices, monstrances, candlesticks and other liturgical objects. The museum is part of the visitor circuit of Nitra Castle, which also includes the Cathedral of St Emerám.
