About the museum
The Ponitrianske múzeum has existed in Nitra since 1990. Its predecessor was the Nitrianske vlastivedné múzeum (Nitra Local History Museum), established by the municipal national committee in December 1962, which was seated in the Great Seminary in Horné mesto (Upper Town).
The museum is housed in the Mestský dom building on Štefánikova trieda, which was built in 1881–1882 in the neo-Renaissance style, and another wing was added to it in 1911. The building long served as the seat of the municipal office, and it was handed over to the museum after 1990.
The collection is divided into natural sciences, history, ethnology and archaeology and contains tens of thousands of objects. The museum presents them in permanent and long-term exhibitions and complements them with lectures, creative workshops and programmes for schools. The branches in Zlaté Moravce and Šaľa are also under the administration of the Ponitrianske múzeum.
