About the museum
The Nitrianska galéria was established on 1 January 1965 and held its first exhibitions in the building of the Grand Seminary. In the same year it obtained premises in the former Župný dom on Župné námestie, where it is based to this day; the first exhibition there opened on 12 December 1965. Gradually it was granted regional and, from 1972, county-level status. It has also been called Galéria Františka Studeného, Nitrianska štátna galéria and Ponitrianska galéria, and returned to its original name in 1999. Since 2002 it has been a budgetary organisation of the Nitra Self-Governing Region.
The Župný dom is a national cultural monument and the gateway to the Horné mesto (Upper Town) conservation area. The originally Baroque palace building from 1823 was extended in 1874–1876 and almost entirely rebuilt in the spirit of Art Nouveau in 1903–1908. Until 1945 it served as the seat of the Nitra county; since 1983 it has been managed by the gallery. Alongside the eastern wing stands a former defensive rampart from the time of the Turkish wars, with the gallery garden, where archaeologists in the 1990s found remains of medieval architecture.
The gallery collects, professionally processes and exhibits works of art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Exhibitions take place in five spaces: the Representative Halls, the Salon, the Gallery of Young Artists, the Bunker and the Colour Gallery (Farebná galéria). The building also houses a concert hall, in which the cycle of chamber concerts Galéria hudby (Gallery of Music) takes place. The Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic awarded the gallery the title Gallery of the Year for 2014 and 2017.
