About the museum
The gallery was founded on 1 January 1979 on the initiative of the Nové Zámky native and academic painter Ernest Zmeták. At first it was housed in the Dom služieb (Service House) on Prednádražie by the bus station; later it obtained premises in the rear wing of the building of the Municipal National Committee. There, on 21 November 1980, it opened the permanent exhibition of European art from the 16th to 20th centuries, a gift from Ernest and Danica Zmeták. In 1986 the Pamätná izba (Memorial Room) of Lajos Kassák was added.
The gallery held its exhibitions in several municipal spaces. In 2003 it obtained its own building on Björnsonova Street, and in January 2004 it opened its exhibition rooms there, in March 2004 the permanent exhibition of Lajos Kassák, and in June 2004 the permanent exhibition of European art from the gift of the Zmeták couple. For the first time, all of the gallery's activities were concentrated in one building. In 2006 the premises were enlarged by an extension and by converting the basement; in 2013 a multifunctional attic space was added for concerts, lectures, talks, creative workshops and performances.
In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the gallery prepares exhibitions of 20th- and 21st-century art focused on Slovak, Hungarian and Czech art. A major project is PERTU, launched in 1993, which compares the work of Slovak and Hungarian artists. The gallery also publishes catalogues and monographs.
