About the museum

The first museum in Nové Zámky was founded in 1936 by the secondary-school teacher Ján Thain, staff captain Ľudvík Albrecht, the archaeology student Béla Szőke and the secretary of the town office Kazimír Saskó. Attempts to establish a museum in the town had been repeated since the end of the 19th century but had long failed. The basis of the later institution was an exhibition of notable objects, which the Nové Zámky Girls' Club organised in 1934.

Today the museum bears the name of its founder and is one of five museums of the Nitra Self-Governing Region. It researches, collects and makes accessible the cultural heritage of Nové Zámky and its surroundings. Its collections consist of archaeological, historical, ethnographic, numismatic and fine-art holdings, and the museum also includes libraries with documents dating from 1594.

In the exhibition halls on M. R. Štefánik Street there are permanent exhibitions devoted to the archaeology, history and folk culture of the region, as well as to the personalities Anton Bernolák and Gergely Czuczor. A branch is the Dom ľudových tradícií (House of Folk Traditions), with a permanent exhibition in the village of Svodín.
