About the museum

The Šurany Municipal Museum was established as part of the Municipal Cultural Centre by resolution of the town council of 6 September 2007; it has its own statute and is registered with the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. The permanent exhibition opened on 21 September 2007, during the traditional Šurany fair. In 2009 it was reinstalled and supplemented with new exhibits with support from a Ministry of Culture grant.

The museum is located on the upper floor of the Orthodox synagogue from 1916, which is a national cultural monument. The eclectic building combines Moorish, Art Nouveau and Byzantine elements and has a remarkable reinforced concrete coffered ceiling. In place of the Torah shrine stands a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. After the interior was renovated, the building opened to the public in May 2005.

The exhibition traces the history of Šurany and its districts Nitriansky Hrádok and Kostolný Sek from prehistory to the 20th century. It includes archaeological finds from the Zámeček site, finds from Šurany Castle, copies of coins from a 15th-century hoard, signed bricks documenting brickmaking, documents on the sugar factory and milling, Judaica, folk ceramics, basketry and folk costume. A model of the town around 1660 and a working tower clock from 1887 also attract attention.
