About the museum
The Múzeum vysťahovalectva z územia Slovenska do Severnej Ameriky (Museum of Emigration from Slovakia to North America) was founded on the initiative of a civic association and bears the name Kasigarda, after the Slovak form of the New York reception centre Castle Garden. Its aim is to commemorate the fates of people who, from the last decades of the 19th century onward, left Slovakia to seek work in America.
It is housed in the so-called amerikánsky dom (American house) in Ťahyňa, which is a national cultural monument. The house was built in 1892 by Andrej Harajda with money he had earned in America. Later, after a collection among Slovaks overseas, he had a church built opposite his house. The museum saved the house, repaired its foundations, roof, plaster and floors, and restored the original doors and windows.
The exhibition presents the history of emigrants from the territory of Slovakia in North America and everything connected with their emigration. The museum also offers online catalogues of its collections, a digital archive and the Slovak American Heritage Garden.
