About the museum
The first collections in Liptov began to be gathered at the end of the 19th century by three students, the Kürti brothers and Mikuláš Geiger. In 1894 the Ružomberok Elisabeth Museum Society made them accessible, but it ceased to exist after four years. The idea of establishing a museum returned in 1911, when the Liptov Museum Society was founded with the task of collecting and exhibiting material on the history, art, nature and folk culture of Liptov.
The museum opened to the public on 1 May 1912 in the building of the former Roman Catholic parsonage in Ružomberok. The core of the collections consisted of the collections of the Kürti brothers and deposits from the parish office and the Piarist monastery. Gradually it developed into a local history museum for the whole region.
Today the Liptov Museum is a contributory organisation of the Žilina Self-Governing Region, with a collection of more than 190,000 objects and several sites in Liptov. In the seat building it offered exhibitions on nature, archaeology, feudalism, guilds and crafts, folk culture, the history of Ružomberok, paper production, Andrej Hlinka and a gallery of sacred art. The building is now closed for reconstruction and for work on a new nature exhibition.
