About the museum
The Záhorská galéria was established after the Senica District National Committee (Rada ONV) designated the Machatka manor house for gallery purposes by resolution of 11 February 1975. The impetus was also a posthumous exhibition of works by national artist Ján Mudroch in 1969; since September 2011 the gallery has borne his name. Adaptation work in the manor house took place in 1978–1984. The gallery changed its name and founder several times; since 2002 it has belonged to the Trnava Self-Governing Region.
The gallery is housed in the late-Baroque manor house, which was probably completed around 1760. The design is attributed to the Viennese architect F. A. Hillebrandt, and the nickname Machatka comes from the wife of the last owner, Imrich Kálmán, née Machatová of Dojč. The two-storey building with a mansard roof has a symmetrical three-wing layout and a square entrance tower with a chapel and an illusionistic Baroque fresco.
From the outset the gallery has focused on Slovak visual art of the 20th and 21st centuries, with emphasis on personalities of the Záhorie region, such as Ján Mudroch, Martin Benka, Albín Brunovský and Dušan Jurkovič. It prepares exhibitions, educational programmes, the Nedeľný ateliér (Sunday Studio) and the Night of Museums and Galleries. In the adjoining park there is a permanent outdoor exhibition of sculptures from the sculpture symposia of 2009 and 2014.
