About the museum
The Museum of Folk Architecture in Bardejovské Kúpele belongs to the Šariš Museum in Bardejov and was opened to the public in 1965. It is considered the oldest open-air museum in Slovakia. The ethnographic department that manages it has worked as an independent unit since 1951; construction of the open-air museum from 1963 was professionally led by Andrej Kovaľ, and the selection of buildings for the museum continued until 1972.
The open-air museum presents the folk architecture of Slovak and Rusyn villages of the 19th and 20th centuries. The most important buildings include the wooden Church of St Nicholas from Zboj from 1775, the wooden church from Mikulášová, and a unique 18th-century water-powered device for boring wooden water pipes.
In Rákoci Villa, in the classicist style, the ethnographic department is housed, and there are also the exhibitions Bardejovské Kúpele – oáza pokoja a zdravia (Bardejov Spa – Oasis of Peace and Health), a pharmacy exhibition and Remeslá našich predkov (Crafts of Our Ancestors). In four exhibition halls visitors can follow the development of the spa from its first written mention to the present, including period furniture, works of art and products of local glassworks.
