About the museum

The Svidník branch continues the tradition of the Dukelské múzeum, which was founded in 1965. Its exhibition spaces were ceremonially opened on 4 October 1969, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Carpathian-Dukla Operation. Today the branch is part of the Vojenské historické múzeum based in Piešťany; by the end of 2024 it had recorded 10,685 objects in 22 museum collections.

The main exhibition, Vojenské dejiny Slovenska v rokoch 1914–1945 (Military History of Slovakia), was opened in a modernised form in 2011. The first part is devoted to the fighting in the Eastern Carpathians in 1914 and 1915, the next to the creation of Czechoslovakia, the building of the army and the events that led to the collapse of the republic in March 1939. The largest unit deals with the Second World War, the partisan movement and the Carpathian-Dukla Operation, and displays the uniforms of Army General Ludvík Svoboda and Marshal Kirill Moskalenko.

The tour includes a diorama of the fighting for the Dukliansky priesmyk (Dukla Pass), which also serves as a small cinema hall. The grounds include an outdoor Park bojovej techniky (park of combat equipment) with tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery and aircraft, and next to the museum stands the Pamätník sovietskej armády (Monument to the Soviet Army) from 1954. The museum also has an outlying exhibition at Dukla with an observation tower.
