About the museum
The museum was founded in 1956 in Prešov. In 1958 it became the Ukrainian department of the Regional Museum in Prešov, and after a reorganisation it was decided to establish the East Slovak Ukrainian Museum in Krásny Brod. In 1964 it moved to Svidník, where it carries out the nationwide task of researching and documenting monuments of the material and spiritual culture of the Ukrainian minority.
The museum is the oldest specialised national minority museum with nationwide scope and belongs to the network of the Slovak National Museum. Since 1965 it has published the scholarly journal Vedecký zborník and it takes part in international projects on traditional folk culture in the Carpathians.
It has three exhibitions: the main cultural-historical exhibition in a protected building from the second half of the 19th century with an extension in the pedestrian zone, the art-historical exhibition in the Dezider Milly Gallery in a manor house, and the ethnographic open-air exhibition (skanzen). The cultural-historical exhibition covers 1,700 m² and traces the development of the region from the Neolithic to the eighties of the 20th century.
