About the museum

The construction of the open-air ethnographic exhibition began in 1975, after extensive historical and ethnographic research at 226 sites in the region. The aim was to preserve the building skills of the ancestors, the development of the floor plan of the house, heating and building techniques.

Objects from various parts of the region were moved to the open-air museum: residential and farm homesteads, seasonal dwellings, a water mill and a windmill, a water sawmill, a smithy, a fire station, a school, a carters' inn with a wagon shed, and sacred buildings. A significant object is the wooden church from 1766 from Nová Polianka, with rich interior decoration.

Since 1986 the folklore-ethnographic festivals Poklady ľudu (Treasures of the People) have been held on the site, with demonstrations of a folk wedding, Easter customs and fairs; the Dni remesiel a ľudových tradícií (Days of Crafts and Folk Traditions) are also popular. The open-air museum belongs to the Múzeum ukrajinskej kultúry (Museum of Ukrainian Culture) within the Slovak National Museum.
