About the museum
The idea of founding a museum in Bardejov arose as early as 1897. It was formally established on 21 December 1903 as the Museum of the Šariš County, and its first director was Dr A. Vass. Collections from the whole county soon reached almost 3,000 objects, and the first historical exhibition on the history of Šariš opened on 23 June 1907 in the town hall building. After 1945 the museum developed as a local history museum, and from 1950 it also focused on documenting the Bardejov urban monument reserve.
Today it documents the historical, natural and social conditions of the Upper Šariš region, and it has a nationwide scope in the field of icon painting of the Eastern rite. It manages more than 700,000 collection objects. Besides the historic town hall, it uses other buildings on Radničné námestie and Rhodyho street, the Rákoci Villa in Bardejovské Kúpele and the open-air museum; in total it manages 34 buildings. The founder is the Prešov Self-Governing Region.
In the centre of Bardejov three permanent exhibitions are open: The Free Royal Town of Bardejov in the historic town hall, the exhibition Icons, and the natural science exhibition Nature of North-Eastern Slovakia and Its Protection. After showing a ticket for any exhibition, visitors have free admission to the exhibition in the Exhibition Hall on Radničné námestie 13. The museum also includes exhibitions in Bardejovské Kúpele and the Šerédy Manor House in Zborov.
