About the museum
The Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce was founded in 1991 as the first museum in the world dedicated to this leading figure of pop art. The location is no accident: Andy Warhol's parents came from the nearby village of Miková, and the family had Rusyn roots. John Warhola, Michal Bycko and F. Hughes contributed to the museum's creation. Since 1 April 2002 its founder has been the Prešov Self-Governing Region.
The collection was built up from works on loan from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York, from private collectors and from the museum's own funds. The presentation also includes documents and personal objects relating to the artist's origins and family.
After an extensive three-year reconstruction costing almost €16 million, the museum reopened to the public in September 2026. The new building has a steel structure, a green roof with a publicly accessible amphitheatre for about 100 people, and black theatre halls for cultural events. The exhibition combines originals with digital and interactive elements, such as a hologram of Andy Warhol, moving Brillo Boxes, a digital iconostasis and interactive screen printing.
