About the museum
The museum was founded on 24 October 1985 by the founding document of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Physical Education Union as a purpose-built institution without legal personality, under the name Múzeum telesnej kultúry v SR (Museum of Physical Culture in the Slovak Republic). The first collection objects were registered in 1987. Initially it had to work in unsuitable basement premises of the Dom športu, and later in rented office space.
Since 1 January 2015 the museum has been an organisational unit of the Slovenský olympijský a športový výbor (Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee, SOŠV). It systematically acquires collection objects, professionally processes and protects them, and makes them accessible through permanent exhibitions, temporary exhibitions, publications and cultural and educational activities focused on the Olympic movement and the history of sport in Slovakia. A popular part of the museum is its library and photo archive.
Today it is housed on the ground floor of the Dom športu. The public can visit the museum at weekends and on Mondays; on working days it receives registered groups. It offers interactive guided tours with expert commentary, lessons for schools, and the rental of its space, which is also used for press conferences and seminars. The SOŠV also operates the Expozícia dejín lyžovania na Slovensku (Exhibition on the History of Skiing in Slovakia) in Kremnica.
