About the museum
The Žitnoostrovské múzeum is housed in the Yellow Manor (Žltý kaštieľ) in the part of Dunajská Streda that was once called Pókatelek. The territory was acquired in 1342 by Michal Szomor, prefect of the Bratislava county, and his descendants administered it until the end of the 19th century. From the 15th century the family used the name Kondé, so Pókatelek is regarded as the family seat of the Kondé family. The manor house itself was built in the 18th century by the bishop of Veszprém, Márton Bíró.
In 2015 the museum grounds underwent extensive renewal: the fence and entrance gate were rebuilt, the garden was adjusted, and the separate exhibition pavilion from 1986 was restored. The pavilion, with an exhibition area of 345 m², is used mainly for short-term exhibitions and cultural events. The museum also manages the Vlastivedný dom v Šamoríne and the Cséfalvayho vodný mlyn in Dunajský Klátov.
The permanent exhibition presents the natural and cultural features of Žitný ostrov. On the ground floor of the manor house there are archaeological and palaeontological finds from the region; on the upper floor visitors learn about livelihoods, traditional Žitný ostrov cuisine, folk costume, guilds and regional art. A special room is the memorial room of the traveller and orientalist Ármin Vámbéry. The manor house has been closed for reconstruction work for an indefinite period since 4 August 2026.
