About the museum
The Slovak company railway museum was founded in 1983 as an organisational unit of the Správa Východnej dráhy ČSD (Administration of the Eastern Railway of the ČSD) in Bratislava. Originally it was called the Pamätník železničnej dopravy na Slovensku (Memorial of Rail Transport in Slovakia), later the Múzejno-dokumentačné centrum (Museum and Documentation Centre), and after the railways were divided it remained part of the Železnice Slovenskej republiky. Since 2018 it has operated as the special-purpose unit Železničné múzeum Slovenskej republiky (Railway Museum of the Slovak Republic), under the management of the Communications Department of ŽSR.
The museum is registered in the register of museums and galleries of the Slovak Republic and carries out comprehensive documentation of the development of railways on the territory of Slovakia. It collects, professionally manages and presents three-dimensional and flat objects, above all historical rail vehicles, whose operability is maintained by volunteer civic associations in several Slovak towns.
Its activities include a permanent exhibition on the history of railways in the Múzeum dopravy STM (Museum of Transport STM), year-round operation of the regional railway museum Výhrevňa Vrútky, and an annual rally of operable historical vehicles. At the Bratislava address the outdoor exhibitions are accessible in the season from 15 April to 15 October; guided tours with commentary and visits to the indoor exhibitions must be arranged in advance.
