About the museum

The first museum for the Tolmin area opened to the public in 1951 in the building of Coronini Castle in Tolmin. It was established to collect, preserve and present the rich and varied heritage of this area, which at one time also included the Bovec and Kobarid regions. It operated as an independent institution for a good seven years; in 1958 it was attached to the Goriški muzej (Gorizia Museum), under which it remained for 42 years as the Tolminska muzejska zbirka (Tolmin Museum Collection).

In April 2000 the Tolminski muzej again became an independent public institution, operating in the municipalities of Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin. It covers archaeology, ethnology, history and art history professionally. Its seat is still in Coronini Castle in the centre of Tolmin, where, besides the administration, storerooms and exhibition rooms, there are a specialist library and a wedding hall.

The permanent exhibition Naplavine obsoške zgodovine has three sections: the archaeological part on the first floor, from the Early Stone Age to the arrival of the Slavs; the historical-ethnological part on the second floor, from the Tolmin peasant revolt of 1713 to the end of the 20th century; and a selection from the art-historical collection in the basement. Besides its main house, the museum looks after several external collections and facilities, for example the archaeological museum at Most na Soči, memorial exhibitions in the birthplaces of Simon Gregorčič and Ciril Kosmač, and ethnological collections in Breginj, Robidišče and Trenta.
