About the museum
The museum is a private collection of weapons and objects from the time of the First World War, the Isonzo Front and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Most of the objects were found in the area of Zatolmin, on Mrzli vrh and on nearby battlefields along the Soča.
The collection was begun by the father, Goran Velikonja; his passion for collecting lasted until his tragic death in 1994. His sons continued and expanded their father's collection, which had previously been kept in the attic of the house. Because there was no longer room in the attic, and the collection was not accessible to visitors, family members added a room for the museum to the house. The collection was solemnly opened on 24 October 2017, on the centenary of the Miracle of Kobarid.
The museum is named after the hill Mrzli vrh, which was an important battlefield in the First World War, as most of the remains come from there. It stands in Zatolmin, just behind the first line of the Soča front at Dolje. The collection comprises about 3,500 objects; the emphasis is on finds excavated from the battlefields and the hinterland. A smaller part relates to the Second World War and the antiquities of the area.
