About the museum

Kozlov rob, which the locals simply call Grad (Castle), is of exceptional cultural and historical importance. The castle, first mentioned in the 12th century, was owned by the patriarchs of Aquileia, the counts of Gorizia, the lords of Cividale (Čedad), the Venetians and the Habsburgs. Earthquakes in 1348 and 1511 changed its appearance, and it was last rebuilt by the Dornbergs in 1608. In the second half of the 17th century, under the Coronini family, the castle was abandoned, as the owners moved into a new building in Tolmin, where the Tolmin Museum is today.

The ruins have been gradually restored in recent years; part of the castle wall and the Chapel of St Martin have been renovated. In part of the restored ruins an interpretation centre has been set up with a permanent exhibition of the Tolmin Museum and a multimedia immersion room that presents the history of Kozlov rob. A historical natural science nature trail with fourteen stations runs along the southern slope.

For families there is the gamified experience “Kozliček na misiji” (Little Kid on a Mission): ohranimo Kozlov rob (let’s save Kozlov rob). A visit can be supplemented with a guided tour of the Trail of Three Castles.
