About the museum
The Čebelarski muzej Radovljica presents the rich tradition of Slovenian beekeeping. The idea of its founding was advocated in the mid-1920s by some prominent Slovenian beekeepers, but it was realised in 1959, when the museum opened in the Baroque Radovljica manor in the old town core. 1973 was a turning point: on the 200th anniversary of the death of Anton Janša the museum acquired additional exhibition rooms and a completely renovated permanent exhibition.
At the last renovation, in 2000, the collection was given a new thematic concept based on the native Carniolan grey bee. The present permanent exhibition Živeti skupaj. O čebelah in ljudeh (Living Together. On Bees and People) was installed in May 2021. It shows the biology of the Carniolan grey bee and its role in the environment, the development of beekeeping tools and equipment, and Slovenian beekeepers and the bee trade.
A special place is held by the collection of more than 200 painted hive panels (panjske končnice), an important part of Slovenian folk art. These are the front boards of kranjič hives, which appeared in the mid-18th century; older motifs show Mary and the saints, younger ones humorous scenes with hunters and craftsmen. From May to October visitors can see an observation hive with live bees. The exhibition is in Slovenian and English, and the museum is run by the Muzeji radovljiške občine (Radovljica Municipal Museums).
