About the museum
About three million years ago the last volcano in Slovenia erupted in the area of today’s Goričko. The Doživljajski park Vulkanija (Vulkanija Experience Park) stands on part of its crater, which measured about one kilometre in diameter, and presents the forces from the depths of the Earth and the geological processes that changed the face of the land and the sea, especially in the geological history of Goričko. The park is run by the Zavod za turizem in kulturo Občine Grad (Tourism and Culture Institute of the Municipality of Grad).
The guided experience tour lasts about one hour: with the mascot, the mole Oli, visitors play volcanic games, look at supervolcanoes through virtual reality glasses, learn about the origin of the universe and of life in a 4D film, search for real geodes in a lava tube, take a lift down into the magma hearth and return to the surface on a 3D underground train.
The entrance ticket also includes the geological museum in the Lednar tannery, a post-war house built of stones of volcanic origin, which was renovated in 2013. It contains the Olivine Room, a geology room with a geological map of Goričko, Oli’s kitchen with a rock cycle, the tannery with its preserved concrete pools, and an exhibition space in the attic with more than 120 minerals in ten display cases and a model of the Goričko volcano.
