About the museum
Grad Grad stands on a steep hill of basalt tuff in the north-west of Goričko. The Lyndwa estate is mentioned in written sources as early as 1208, records of the castle building date from 1275, and archaeological excavations show that the castle already existed in the 11th century. Between 1365 and 1685 the Szechy family ruled here; then the estate was administered by other noble families, among them the Nádasdy. In 1945 the Red Army was quartered in the castle. After the war it was nationalised, and the settlement was renamed from Gornja Lendava to Grad.
Between 1960 and 1995 the castle was left to decay. Restoration began in 1995; since 1999 it has been a cultural monument of national importance owned by the Republic of Slovenia, and since 2003 the public institute Krajinski park Goričko and a visitor centre for the castle and park have been based in the restored premises. The castle is part of the Ceste gradov (Castle Route) and of the Trideželni park Goričko–Raab–Őrség (Trilateral Park Goričko–Raab–Őrség).
Visitors can explore the castle rooms on their own or with a guide, the workshops of local crafts, a nature exhibition, the chapel with frescoes, and the round castle cellar with a wine bar. Younger visitors are guided by the legend of the dragon Kač with the golden crown.
