About the museum
The Hiša aleksandrink in the centre of Prvačina is the central museum collection, dedicated to preserving the memory of the courageous women who used their earnings in Egypt to rescue their families and homes, from the second half of the 19th century until the Second World War. The mass emigration of female workers from the Goriška region, where they were employed as wet nurses and maids, began in the second half of the 19th century, when, with the construction of the Suez Canal and after its opening in 1869, the number of European entrepreneurs in Egypt increased.
The exhibition is mainly dedicated to the stories of individual aleksandrinke from various places in the Vipava Valley. On display are their original clothes, documents and objects, which they brought from Egypt in large travelling trunks called “bauli”; a dowry is also exhibited.
Visitors are guided through the exhibition by one of the members of the Društvo za ohranjanje kulturne dediščine aleksandrink. The house is currently being renovated as part of the project “Kulinarična in bivanjska kultura aleksandrink”.
