About the museum
The museum occupies the former Hospital de Sancti Spiritus, a building of medieval origin that housed pilgrims in a town through which the Camino Francés and the Camino Primitivo pass. It reopened in 2001 as a regional museum devoted to the history and traditions of the Terra de Melide.
The first room is devoted to the Camino de Santiago and to the history of the pilgrims' hospital itself, with photographs of monuments on the Camino, a model of the monuments of the region, medieval capitals, a 15th-century sarcophagus and wall painting. The next two rooms are archaeological: the second brings together remains from the Neolithic to the castro culture, from nearby sites such as the Castro da Graña or Vila de Piñeiro, and the third deals with Romanisation.
The ethnographic section is spread over four rooms with traditional crafts such as carpentry, shoemaking and clog-making, as well as toys, school life, music, a flax room and a re-created dwelling.
