About the museum
The fortress of San Paio de Narla, in Friol, was acquired by the Provincial Council of Lugo in 1939 and opened as a history and ethnography museum in 1983, when much of the ethnographic collection of the Museo de Lugo was moved there. It is now part of the Rede Museística Provincial de Lugo (Lugo Provincial Museum Network).
The fortress was demolished during the Irmandiño revolts of the 15th century and rebuilt in the following century, so the present building is mainly the work of the 16th and 17th centuries. It has a central body flanked by the keep (torre del Homenaje) and a large tower, and an 18th-century chapel, separate from the main building, with a 19th-century altarpiece.
The ground floor, made up of the courtyard, stables and cellar, houses farm implements, horse-riding objects and tools for weaving wool and flax. The first floor recreates a kitchen, a living room and other rooms with decorative objects, furniture and household linen. From the top floor, which has a Renaissance fireplace, visitors reach the battlements and views of the surroundings.
