About the museum
The Museo de Antropología Giner-Abati, known as MAGA, was created by Francisco Giner Abati, emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of Salamanca, in San Cristóbal de la Cuesta, a few kilometres from Salamanca. The building was erected during the 2020 lockdown, and the museum opened its doors in October 2021, with open days for local residents and university audiences.
The collection comes from more than thirty years of fieldwork, expeditions and contact with indigenous peoples across the world. It includes clothing, weapons, jewellery and goldwork, toys, works of art and photographs of peoples such as the San, the Maasai, the Himba of Namibia, fishermen of the Solomon Islands and groups from South-East Asia. A film brings together several documentaries on these cultures.
The museum’s exhibitions rotate; among them have been “Los Universales Culturales” and “La Lengua Desatada”. The centre collaborates with the University of Salamanca, offers placements for students and school visits, and has a library. Visits are by appointment.
