About the museum
The Museo de la Fauna Salvaje in Valdehuesa grew out of the collection that Eduardo Romero Nieto built up over more than fifty years of travel to very different corners of the world, together with objects and artworks related to nature. The museum belongs to the Fundación Dr. Romero Nieto and was made possible with support from the Junta de Castilla y León, the Diputación de León (Provincial Council of León), Boñar Town Council, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Duero and the University of León.
The building stands on an arm of the Porma reservoir, surrounded by oak woods, beech woods and limestone mountains. Twenty-five rooms, arranged by continent, present stuffed animals in dioramas that recreate their habitats. Other spaces have since been added: a scientific anatomy room, an entomology museum, a library, a classroom and an audiovisual room. Outside, more than twenty life-size bronze sculptures line the entrance.
The museum works with the Zoological Collections of the University of León (CZULE) to catalogue the specimens using microchips. It also runs a zoo park of about 30 hectares in an oak wood, with animals living in semi-wild conditions, which is visited on a guided tour.
