About the museum
The museum occupies the former Ferrería de San Blas (San Blas ironworks), in the Sabero valley (León), where Spain's first iron and steel industry was set up in 1846. The Sociedad Palentino-Leonesa de Minas brought together Miguel Iglesias Botias, Santiago Alonso Cordero and Casiano de Prado, who wanted to bring to Spain techniques and infrastructure already used in Belgium and France. It was the country's first ironworks with blast furnaces fuelled by coke: the first produced iron from 1847 and the second was inaugurated in 1860. The factory closed in 1866.
What remains of the complex is the large rolling and forging hall, in neo-Gothic architecture, the only trace in Spain of an industrial facility in that style. The Junta de Castilla y León converted it into a museum as a tribute to the people who made this industry possible: companies, workers and civil society.
The exhibition is organised in four areas: the origins of the great European steelworks and the architecture of the ironworks; the history of the valley and its rural community before the arrival of industry; the promoting company, the raw materials, the coke blast furnace and the puddling process; and an introduction to mining, with a large model of the Sabero basin. The route is completed by the reconstruction of the ironworks' pharmacy and fitting workshop.
