About the museum
The association Bil- och Teknikhistoriska Sällskapet (the Motor and Technology History Society) was formed in the latter half of the 1980s. Bertil Lindblad's foundation, which collects cars and motorcycles that Bertil Lindblad and Curt Borgenstam restored, forms the basis of the museum. In August 1995 it was decided to create a museum, and the name Bil- och Teknikhistoriska Samlingarna (Motor and Technology History Collections) was chosen in May 1996. The focus became exclusive vehicles from the period before the 1940s.
The museum is located in the former foundry of Köpings Mekaniska Verkstad (Köping Mechanical Workshop), and the association's premises are a steam-engine hall from 1892 designed by the architect Theodor Dahl. In 1996 the municipal council decided that the association could use the premises, and in summer 1996 the large diesel engine from Hasta mill, which had previously been used at the Lidingö power station, was moved to the museum.
The collection includes vehicles from the 1910s to the 1930s, among them Scandinavia's finest collection of Bugatti cars and makes such as Pierce-Arrow, Panhard-Levassor, Voisin, Cadillac, Rolls-Royce and Bentley, as well as the Mercedes-Benz racing car SSK from 1929. In addition there are some fifty other vehicles and technical objects in period settings, including a car workshop from the 1920s and parts from Volvo and Köpings Mekaniska Verkstad. A theme exhibition is shown every year.
