About the museum

Nyströmska gården is Köping’s last surviving courtyard farm (ågård) and has roots in the 17th century. From 1870 it functioned as a joinery farm for three generations. The workshop is today well preserved and a major attraction, with almost all of its equipment still in place, and the machines and tools can still be used.

The joiners did all their work to order. The most common jobs were building joinery such as door frames, doors and windows, and furniture, but sometimes smaller boats were also built. Since no stamps or other markings were used, the furniture can be difficult to identify today.

Nyströms Snickeri mainly used alder burl (alrot) as the material for furniture, and furniture of alder burl veneer has a long tradition in Köping. The workshop was the last in the town to make alder burl tables. The farm is run by Köpings stads museer (Köping City Museums) and an exhibition hall.
