About the museum
Köpings museum (Köping Museum) was founded in 1887 by the town of Köping on the initiative of the rope-maker Per Alfred Dandernell. Since 1972 the collections have been housed in what was Köping's old brewery. The oldest part of the building was erected in 1761 as a malt house and was rebuilt in 1775 as a crown distillery (kronobränneri). In 1860 the property was bought by Köpings Bryggeriaktiebolag, which produced both soft drinks and beer. When Eskilstuna Bryggeri AB bought the brewery in 1946, production ceased the following year. The municipality took over the property, demolished the extensions and preserved the oldest parts, from the 1700s.
The basic exhibitions reflect events and people from the municipality's history: the early history from the Stone Age to the Viking Age, the Middle Ages, the casket maker Jacob Sjölin and the alrot masters (alrotsmästarna), the pharmacist and chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, who worked in Köping 1775–1786, and Köping's history from 1850 to the present day. The museum also shows several art exhibitions each year in the exhibition hall.
The same farmstead houses Köpings brandmuseum (Köping Fire Museum), which has the same opening hours. The Köping town museums and exhibition hall also manage Gammelgårdens friluftsmuseum (Gammelgården Open-Air Museum) and Nyströmska gården (Nyström Farm).
