About the museum
Bjäsäters kvarn was built around 1832 and was initially owned by the whole village. It probably replaced the older skvaltkvarnar (simple water-powered mills) found at several farms in the area. In the 1850s the mill became privately owned, and the last miller, Stefan Engdahl, ran it from 1919 until his death in 1966. The family also ran a shop in the village and a sawmill driven by the same turbine.
Vreta klosters hembygdsförening bought the mill in 1968 and got it running again in the early 1970s. Today the mill is driven by a turbine, but previously there was a water wheel. The mechanism, with shafts, drive wheels and sieves, can be seen inside the mill.
By the mill there is also a smithy, a mill stable and a herb garden. A farm museum is housed in a loge (a small wooden outbuilding) that is not owned by the association. Every year at the end of September the association holds a mill day with threshing, grinding, crafts, folk dancing and an open museum.
