About the museum
Blåherremölla is a water mill south of Maglehem, driven by water from the Julebodaån river. The mill site is mentioned in records as early as the 1620s. The name probably comes from blåherre, a local word for heron. The present mill was built in the 18th century and was for a long time a leased mill under Torup estate, where the farmers of the district had their grain ground.
The mill sits as if on an island in the stream and is an undershot wheel mill that drives two pairs of millstones. It was in operation until 1944, when it was bought out by a private individual. Gärds Härads hembygdsförening (Gärds Härad Local Heritage Society) bought it in 1971 and ran it for several decades as a local history museum. Today the site is privately owned again. The mill environment, with the Skåne farmstead (skånegård) built around its courtyard, the miller's and farmhand's dwellings and storehouse ranges, has been a listed building since 2012.
The machinery still works and is run on special milling days, when flour is ground and bread is baked in the wood-fired stone oven. Blåherremöllas Vänner (Friends of Blåherremölla), the district's voluntary local heritage association, helps with operations and was named Local Heritage Society of the Year 2025 by Skånes Hembygdsförbund (the Skåne Local Heritage Federation). On site there is a mill museum, a café and a gallery.
