About the museum
Kiviks Museum was founded in 1890 by Ola Cappelin and is regarded as Österlen's oldest museum. In 1947 the activities were taken over by Kiviks hembygds- och museiförening (Kivik Local Heritage and Museum Association). The collections and the extensive archive are today owned by Stiftelsen Kiviks Museum & Arkiv (the Kiviks Museum & Archive Foundation), and the museum celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2020.
The collection comprises over 5,000 objects from the Stone Age to the present day. The museum portrays the fishing and shipping from the time when Kivik was one of Sweden's largest shipowning communities; the hard farming life that laid the foundation for entrepreneurship and for Sweden's apple-growing region; and the trade networks that reach back to the Bronze Age Kiviksgraven and the Iron Age Maletofta.
The exhibitions are currently shown in the old school building at Bredarörsvägen 1, about 200 metres from the Kiviksgraven. The museum is preparing to move its activities and, in time, its exhibitions too, to the new meeting place Museum möten mat at Killebacken 3, where there is already a café, a bakery, tourist information and a simple digital exhibition about the area's ancient monuments. The museum also arranges guided walks on a large number of themes throughout the Kivik district.
