About the museum

Stenörens ålabod (Stenören eel shed) lies at Haväng on the shore of Hanö Bay, on the stretch of coast called Ålakusten (the Eel Coast). The shed dates from the mid-1700s, but eel fishing here is considerably older. Christinehof estate had held the fishing rights in southern Hanö Bay for several centuries and leased them out to fishing teams; the oldest known agreement dates from 1698. Stenören's fishing spot was considered to have the best fishing.

At its peak the fishing here supported a team of eight men, and when the shed went out of use in the early 1960s only two people were left. When boats became more modern, fishing moved to the harbour at Vitemölla. Until the 1930s the shed was used to store gear and as a place to stay overnight.

The shed is owned by Stiftelsen för fritidsområden i Skåne (the Foundation for Recreation Areas in Skåne) and was renovated by Havängs Museiförening (Haväng Museum Association); the work was completed in 2001. Inside the building there is information on how eel fishing was carried out, as well as old equipment and eel traps (ålhommor). The building is a listed heritage site (byggnadsminne).
