About the museum
Borgquistska is a hat, cap and fur workshop founded in 1866 by Per Borgkvist, born Per Larsson, at Algatan 35 in Trelleborg. He began as a tailor and cap maker and in time became a hat maker (buntmakare). After his death in 1901 his son Axel Julius took over, and in the 1920s the grandchildren Julia and Malte joined the company. Malte became the company's third and last generation. In the factory premises on the second floor, usually four to five seamstresses worked on peaked caps, school caps, student caps and fur garments.
The company closed on Saturday 30 December 1978 after 112 years. The workshop on the upper floor was left untouched, with tools, patterns, semi-finished products and sewing machines still in place, until the property owner, who bought the house in 2004, and the Föreningen Gamla Trelleborg (Old Trelleborg Association) began planning a museum. The association undertook the work of fitting out the premises and guiding visitors; the collection was donated to the municipality, and Trelleborgs museum became the principal organiser. In 2014 the museum was named Working-Life Museum of the Year (Årets arbetslivsmuseum).
Today the museum is run by Föreningen Gamla Trelleborg on a voluntary basis, while the municipality owns the collection. The workshop has been so carefully preserved that it feels as if the seamstresses have just gone on their coffee break. A large part of the collections has been digitised and can be found on Digitaltmuseum. The museum is on the upper floor with its entrance from Odens tvärgränd and is Trelleborg's smallest museum.
