About the museum
Sirmiones Skeppslag is a non-profit association in Gislövs läge (the Gislöv fishing hamlet), formed after a discussion in 2003 about there being too few wooden boats left from the past. Since then the association has built a veteran boat pier and a museum, renovated a tudehus (traditional fishing shed) and built a bark cauldron (barkgryta). The oldest boat, Sirmione, was built around 1915 and is still sailed. The association was named association of the year in Trelleborg Municipality in 2015.
The Kustfiskemuseet (Coastal Fishing Museum) was inaugurated in 2017 at Veteran Boat Day, beside the place where fishing boats used to be laid up for maintenance and winter storage. The museum shows photographs, fishing gear, boats and documentation from the professional fishermen who had Gislöv as their home harbour, from the early 1900s to around 2000, including about eel fishing on the south coast and the role of women and families in fishing life.
At the veteran boat pier about ten restored wooden boats are moored during the boating season. The association has provided cultural information for school classes in Trelleborg Municipality since 2012, and it shows the fishing boat TG24, which the Maritime Museum (Sjöhistoriska museet) is designating as a cultural heritage object in 2026.
