About the museum
The Trelleborg maritime museum was born in summer 1995, when a group of people interested in shipping decided to form a museum at a meeting on board R/K Hans Hansson. The association was named Trelleborgs Sjöfartsmusei vänner (Friends of Trelleborg’s Maritime Museum) and is a non-political association with the aim of preserving and showing the town’s maritime and fishing culture.
In 1997 the museum was given use of the first floor of the Tryckarehuset at Hamngatan 10, and it remained there for almost ten years. When HSB wished to buy the site to build high-rise blocks, the museum moved to the old sugar works office at the corner of Bryggaregatan and Gråbrödersgatan, which had previously been a school building for Komvux (adult education). The museum got the first floor there, and other associations were given the upper floors.
The collections consist of objects that have been collected, donated or deposited. The museum has a department on fishing and a large exhibition on Trelleborg as a shipping town, with models from the Sjöfartshistoriska Stiftelse (Maritime History Foundation) of Malmros Rederi AB. Steam ferries and train ferries have a large place, including models of the ferries Drottning Victoria, Konung Gustav V and Starke.
