About the museum
Trelleborgen is a reconstruction of a quarter of a Viking-age ring fortress, built in 1995 on exactly the spot where archaeologists found traces of the fortress in 1988. The fortress is thought to have been built in the second half of the 10th century and is probably one of Harald Blåtand's ring fortresses, a so-called trelleborg. It was about 144 metres in diameter and surrounded by a moat. The interpretation of how the fortress looked is based on archaeological research, traditional craft knowledge and images of other fortresses.
The site was settled long before and after the Viking Age, and Trelleborg took its name from the fortress. Where the ring fortress stood, a town with a market square, a church and a monastery was built in the Middle Ages, and a little over a hundred years ago a sugar mill (sockerbruk) stood on the hill; the office building from 1898 still stands next to the reconstruction.
Today the open-air museum is run by Trelleborgs museer (Trelleborg Museums). Visitors can walk on the fortress rampart, see a Viking farm with a longhouse, a pit house and cultivation, visit a reconstructed medieval house and see the exhibition Borgen vid havet. In summer the Viking farm is staffed by educators who show crafts and everyday life, and Café Oden has a view of the park.
