About the museum

Krigsflygfält 16 (Wartime Airfield 16) at Brattforsheden between Molkom and Filipstad was built before the Second World War as one of some forty secret wartime airfields, which were to enable the air force to disperse its aircraft. The Riksdag (Swedish Parliament) granted funds in 1939, and the work was completed in 1940. The airfield was disguised as farmland with dummy roads and dummy ditches, and the buildings were hidden or designed to look like farms and cattle sheds.

After the war the field was used as a military training area, and in the 1960s parts of it were opened for civilian activities. Unlike most other wartime airfields, Brattforsheden was never expanded or modernised, and therefore the environment remains more or less intact. The preserved buildings include staff and orders barracks, a mess hut, barn-type aircraft shelters (ladvärn) and various storehouses. In 2003 the County Administrative Board of Värmland (Länsstyrelsen Värmland) established a cultural reserve of about 411 hectares.

The Stiftelsen Krigsflygfält 16 (Krigsflygfält 16 Foundation) works to preserve and bring to life the heritage of the wartime emergency years. In summer, guided walks, tracked-vehicle trips, a VR film from 1942 and a summer café are offered. The area can also be visited independently all year round.
